Spin the globe, around it goes
I’ve got a map, my compass shows
4 main directions, cardinal
North and South run pole to pole
Now, up and down is longitude
Left and right has a name, too
It’s East and West, latitude
Use what you know to find something new

I was born and raised in the state of Florida
That’s in North America, south of Georgia
As a young boy, I was always exploring
And getting lost, I didn’t know where I was going
Until my teacher taught me to read a map
She said, “Longitude and latitude make a graph”
I saw symbols and stars, before I could ask
She told me the map’s key shows where to get gas
Where to find a restroom or locate a park
Other symbols represent capitals and landmarks
Different areas are shaded light or dark
To differentiate terrain or temperature
Refer to the map legend, check the distance
Longitude connects the poles, where it is frigid
Latitude runs left to right, like a sentence
So let’s navigate the oceans and explore continents

Spin the globe, around it goes
I’ve got a map, my compass shows
4 main directions, cardinal
North and South run pole to pole
Now, up and down is longitude
Left and right has a name, too
It’s East and West, latitude
Use what you know to find something new

I spun the globe and couldn’t believe
My finger landed on Washington, D.C.
Did you know it is the capital of our country?
The center of politics and lawmaking
There are physical landmarks to touch and see
The White House where the President speaks and sleeps
As well as cultural and historical themes
The city’s rich with tradition and diversity
You can Google it now and visit later
Now, let’s talk about the meridian and equator
The meridian runs up and down like an elevator
0 degrees longitude is where it is located
And we know the North and South poles are cold
But it’s hot near the equator, that’s tropical
The equator runs east to west on the globe
Like a belt on your waist, around the middle it goes

Spin the globe, around it goes
I’ve got a map, my compass shows
4 main directions, cardinal
North and South run pole to pole
Now, up and down is longitude
Left and right has a name, too
It’s East and West, latitude
Use what you know to find something new
