When I was small all I wanted was a dollar
Something I could look at when I opened up my wallet
I didn’t understand the value of money
That five dollars was worth less than twenty
What a decimal meant or how to round
The consequence of moving numbers around
I saw number sentences without words
Math was a new language. Where were my verbs?
I wrote 11+37 = 60
My teacher marked it wrong, she didn’t get me
I told her I was trying to be creative
She said math is logical, it never changes
11 + 37 = 48
Always 48, no need to estimate
Estimates are close to exact amounts
They only have value when a good guess counts

Place value, the value of a digit
Based on location, clap if you get it
4,253
We have to multiply, to know what it means
3 is in the ones place, so that’s 3
5 is in the tens place, that’s 50
2 times 100 is 200 and
4 times 1,000 is 4 thousand

1-0 is the standard form of ten
The word form is written T-E-N
Expanded form is a little bit different
It’s the way to show the value of each digit
Let’s take the number 2,584
2000 + 500 + 80 + 4
That’s expanded form, I can’t stop clapping
Let’s compare numbers to see what happens
92 is more than, greater than 7
The numbers 1 through 10 are less than 11
And 20 is equal to 20, always
I used to practice math terms in the hallways

{Music Stops}

Really?

Yeah, you know like. I would walk to class and quiz myself on things like order, which is the particular arrangement or placement of numbers one after the other. Like a pattern, 10, 20, 30, . . .

Weren’t you in the middle of a rap?

{Music Starts}

(continued)
Groups of numbers separated by commas are periods
A comma after 3 digits show where a series ends
I’m serious, it goes ones, tens, and hundreds
One thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands

Before you estimate, you have to round
How do you know when to round up or down?
If the digit to the right is 4 or less
The number to the its left, remains in check
If the digit to the right is greater than 4
The number to its’ left adds one more
The rounding digit always becomes zero
Now you’re a place value hero
