I started from the bottom, like a denominator
Now I’m on top, call me the numerator
Back in the day I confess that I was afraid of
Fractions like the bad guy in Terminator
I ran away, but said, “I’ll be back”
Now I’m attacking math, break it down like fractions
Let’s learn the words, put them into action
When you get math it works like magic
First word, abracadabra
Just kidding, I mean fraction
A fraction is a number that names a part
Of a whole number or group, it has two parts
The numerator on top tells how many pieces
Are being counted or eaten, think of a pizza
What tells how many slices came in the box?
The bottom number, the denominator, does that job

1/2, 1/4, 1/8
The denominator grows with every half I take
4/8, 2/4, 1/2, no more
Take the fraction down to its simplest form
I’ve got this, no problem
Give me fractions, watch me solve’em
It doesn’t matter if the numbers are mixed
Common factors and multiples are the fix

A benchmark is a size or amount you understand
And compare to, think of a can
It’s filled to the top with your favorite soda
Then your friend sits down and knocks it over
Half of your drink is fizzing on the table
The other half is in the can, safe and stable
Then your friend says, can I have a sip?
Then drinks half of the half, that leaves you with . . .
{Music} Yep, 1/4
When the numerator is 1, there is a name for it
It’s called a unit fraction, but wait there’s more
Unit fractions are always in simplest form
That means the numerator and denominator
Only have 1 as a common factor, say I’m nominating
6 people for 2 awards, break it down now
What are their odds?

1/2, 1/4, 1/8
The denominator grows with every half I take
4/8, 2/4, 1/2, no more
Take the fraction down to its simplest form
I’ve got this, no problem
Give me fractions, watch me solve’em
It doesn’t matter if the numbers are mixed
Common factors and multiples are the fix

2 and 3/4 is a mixed number because it contains a whole number, 2 and a fraction, 3/4
2 and 3/4 can also be expressed as 2.75 (ask your teacher why)

When two or more fractions mean the same thing
They are equivalent, let me explain
12/16, 6/8, & 3/4
It all means the same as the simplest form
A common multiple of two or more
Denominations is a common denominator
Denomiwho? When? Where? Why? What for?
Let’s say we wanted to add 2/3 and 1/4
We have to make the bottom numbers match
While keeping each fraction the same, that’s the catch
Turn 2/3 into 8/12 and 1/4 to 3/12
The answer is 11/12, give me something else!

1/2, 1/4, 1/8
The denominator grows with every half I take
4/8, 2/4, 1/2, no more
Take the fraction down to its simplest form
I’ve got this, no problem
Give me fractions, watch me solve’em
It doesn’t matter if the numbers are mixed
Common factors and multiples are the fix
