I am a citizen
In a community
Under the government
Created for you and me
A system of unity
We have the choice to be
A part of the problem
Or a good piece of history

I was made in America, land of the free
But lately I’ve been trying to figure out what it means
To be a good citizen of a country
Resident of a state, member of a community
Local of a city, neighbor in a neighborhood
A place I can come from and wanna stay for good
A place I’m accepted because I live as I should
That means I obey the laws, no rules are misunderstood
I could be a resident of the White House like the President
If others look up to me and expect I set a precedence
Thanks to the past we get to live in the present tense
Where we all have rights, not divided like sides of a fence

I am a citizen
In a community
Under the government
Created for you and me
A system of unity
We have the choice to be
A part of the problem
Or a good piece of history

A person that belongs to a country is a citizen
He or she has equal rights, duties, and privileges
Guess what you call a place that you play, work, and live?
Bigger than a neighborhood, counties are different
Then it must be a community, made up of you and me
Rights are freedoms that we have and rules give us unity
Rules teach what and not to do, by listening
We can earn something called r-e-s-p-e-c-t
Next, we have laws, created by the government
People that manage our country under covenant
Sworn to protect rights for each and every one of us
By making rules we obey and I think that sums it up

I am a citizen
In a community
Under the government
Created for you and me
A system of unity
We have the choice to be
A part of the problem
Or a good piece of history
