If you know about rocks, you can be a rockstar
Let me see you rock, 3 types of rocks are
Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary
Some rocks are new, some have been around for centuries
First we observe, then collect data
Next classify, when we know what they’re made of
Last, we conclude and our work is done
Let me see you rock, if you’re having fun

From city blocks to chalk, let’s talk about rocks
You can find them in soil or on sidewalks
Pebbles are small, but mountains are tall
Some are very strong, others crumble and fall
Put rocks on a scale and the lightest of all
Is pumice, it has holes and floats, promise
But try it for yourself, fill up a bowl
Does it soak it up water? Is it permeable?
I don’t know, try it, record the results
That’s called data, now use what you know
To classify rocks into different groups
When you touch them are the textures rough or smooth?

If you know about rocks, you can be a rockstar
Let me see you rock, 3 types of rocks are
Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary
Some rocks are new, some have been around for centuries
First we observe, then collect data
Next classify, when we know what they’re made of
Last, we conclude and our work is done
Let me see you rock, if you’re having fun

Igneous rocks are made from fire or heat
You probably don’t have any of these on your street
Pumice, obsidian, granite, and basalt
Come from volcanoes or pressure from a fault
Sedimentary rocks are easy to find
And how chalk, flint, coal, and limestone are classified
These rocks are useful once mined and refined
They can be used to write, build, and power the lights
Metamorphic rocks change with pressure and heat
They begin as igneous or sedimentary
But then weathering causes minerals to change
That’s how we get quartz, marble, and slate

If you know about rocks, you can be a rockstar
Let me see you rock, 3 types of rocks are
Igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary
Some rocks are new, some have been around for centuries

Breakdown
So grab an eyedropper and magnifying glass
Search sand and soil, find a rock, show the class
Explain characteristics, be specific
Everybody rock on, rocks are terrific

Rocks, rocks, are terrific
Rocks, rocks, are terrific
Rocks, rocks, are terrific
Rocks, rocks, are terrific

That was fun!
Anybody can be a Rock Star!
Rock on!
